What you'll learn

Being a producer sounds fancy, but many don’t actually know what one does. Producers are involved in every stage of the filmmaking process from development to distribution. In this session, you’ll learn what this role is really all about.
By the end of the session, you will know how to:
  • Define what a producer is and the different kinds of producers
  • Understand the producer’s role in each stage of the filmmaking process
  • Begin creating a financial plan & dossier for your film project/s
In the film business, producers eat rejections & heartaches for breakfast & lunch, especially when it comes to pitching & looking for financing. But it’s an art that can be learned. In this session, you’ll present your financial plan and dossier that you’ve learned to put together, discuss with your instructor & classmates, get feedback, and make it better. There’s no substitute for road-testing your idea, and this session is a priceless opportunity to do so.
By the end of the session, you will know how to:
  • Make a solid, stress-tested financial plan for your film project
  • Evaluate financials plans and dossiers – both yours and your classmates’!
  • Improve your own plan & dossier, and get it closer to being market-ready
Film is a business, and producers need to know how to work with numbers. In this session, you’ll learn the elements of the elevator pitch when talking to potential financiers of your film, the budget breakdown, and how waterfall recoupment works – that is, how proceeds from your film get distributed among the different financiers.
By the end of the session, you will know how to:
  • Put together an elevator pitch, especially for people on the business/financing side
  • Create & manage a budget, and ensure that you’re spending on the right things
  • Understand waterfall recoupment – who gets paid first, how much, and when, among the different financiers & stakeholders of your film project
One of the best ways to learn is to go through actual cases & examples of film projects – how they were developed, financed, distributed, and sold/monetized. In this session, we will also discuss the different career paths one could take in film, and how to go about setting up your own production company if that’s something you would like to do now or eventually!
By the end of the session, you will know how to:
  • Shepherd film projects from beginning to end, and identify key success factors for actual films to get made
  • Navigate various potential career paths in film and what to consider when choosing your path
  • Go about the basic & practical steps to set up your own production company
  • Understand the producer's role across different stages of filmmaking
  • Create a budget breakdown, financial plan, and dossier
  • Pitch your project & present your dossier, and evaluate your classmates' too!
  • Learn how to distribute & monetize your film, and how recoupment works
  • Discuss actual case studies, career paths in film, and how to set up your own company

“We need more film producers and filmmakers to record our time, our human behavior, our culture. We need people who can create life-changing pieces of cinema, who can change how people think, feel, and live.

In my class, I’m going to try and make you understand and appreciate what a film producer does in every aspect of filmmaking. Most importantly, I’m going to make you fall in love with cinema, and love cinema as much as I do.” - Bianca Balbuena, Producer
